January 15, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Household spending in emerging markets is forecast to grow between 7.7 percent and 15.2 percent in 2013–2016 compared with 4.5 percent in the United States and 3.6 percent in the United Kingdom, according to a report published by Economist Intelligence Unit and Mintel. Consumer’s food spending is forecast to remain strong in all markets; however, US and UK consumers spend less of their income on food in the home compared with consumers in emerging markets. Household products are forecast to grow, with India having the highest growth rate at 21 percent, followed by China and Turkey with 15 percent each. Consumption of prepared foods is also forecast to increase during the period covered by the study.
